Most healthcare professionals are worried about opioid abuse: 6 findings

A Medscape survey found 74 percent of healthcare professionals are very concerned about opioid abuse.

Here are six findings:

 

1. In the survey, 24 percent of healthcare professionals said they were somewhat concerned.

 

2. Ninety-one percent of professionals converse with patients about how and when to take these drugs.

 

3. In the survey, 93 percent of professionals said they discuss potential side effects with patients.

 

4. However, only 55 percent of professionals discuss safe storage and proper disposal.

 

5. A WebMD survey found 42 percent of consumer respondents store unused pills for future use, and only 23 percent said they returned unused opioids to pharmacies.

 

6. The survey found 63 percent of consumer respondents have used an opioid and 35 percent have used a drug in the last three years.
