How many adult spinal deformity surgery patients acquire HAC? — 4 observations

A study recently published in Spine reveals the factors most likely to cause hospital acquired conditions in adult spinal deformity surgery patients.

Here are four things to know:

 

1. Out of 5,819 patients included in the study, 313 (5.4 percent) had HAC.

 

2. The following factors are associated with developing HAC:

 

  • Age
  • Functional status
  • Surgical approach
  • Utilization of osteotomies
  • Steroid Use
  • Obesity
  • Operation time

 

3. HACs provide an incentive for hospitals and ASCs to improve patient safety. They are subject to a nonpayment policy by CMS.

 

4. HACs make postoperative morbidity and mortality rates in the ASD population more severe.
