Detroit-based Henry Ford Health performed what is believed to be the world’s first GammaTile procedure on spinal tumor, clickondetroit.com reported May 20.

GammaTile is a small implant with radioactive cesium-131 seeds in a titanium capsule. It’s designed for targeted radiation but previously wasn’t used in the spine. Neurosurgeon Adam Robin, MD, had used GammaTile for brain tumors and used a 3D-printed model of the patient’s spine to pre-plan the procedure.

Eighteen months after the procedure the patient has recovered and hasn’t had any pain since, the report said.

At the Becker's 23rd Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC + The Future of Spine Conference, taking place June 11-13 in Chicago, spine surgeons, orthopedic leaders and ASC executives will come together to explore minimally invasive techniques, ASC growth strategies and innovations shaping the future of outpatient spine care.
