Spine surgeon Carl Sartorius, MD, has retired, effective Dec. 31, Carmel, Ind.-based Goodman Campbell Brain And Spine said.

Dr. Sartorius joined the practice in 1990 when it was known as the Indianapolis Neurosurgical Group, according to a Dec. 12 announcement. When he joined, there were only 10 other physicians with the group.

Dr. Sartorius’ specialty was in lumbar and cervical spine surgery, along with brain tumor treatment. He spent more than 35 years with Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine.

“He gifted us with showing the human aspect of neurosurgery,” Goodman Campbell CEO, Derek Cantrell, said in the announcement. “His patients and families were treated like his own family members. He followed up personally with his patients by phoning them after surgery. He shared his personal cell phone number with every surgical patient he treated (hopefully they didn’t call him at 3:00am!). He has been an integral part of the culture of Goodman Campbell with his work for many years as Chair of the Quality Committee. Helping to ensure the continued focus on doing the right thing for patients and holding his own colleagues accountable is such a unique part of what binds this group together.”
