John Cowan, MD, a neurosurgeon who has practiced medicine in Georgia for more than a decade, won Georgia’s 11th Congressional District election Nov. 3, defeating Democratic attorney Chris Harden, according to a Nov. 3 Atlanta News First report.

Dr. Cowan, a Republican and small-business owner from Cartersville, Ga., will succeed retiring Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., who has represented the district since 2015.

The election marks Dr. Cowan’s second congressional bid. He previously ran for Georgia’s 14th Congressional District in 2020, advancing to a Republican primary runoff before losing to former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Dr. Cowan secured the Republican nomination earlier this year after defeating Rob Adkerson, Mr. Loudermilk’s former chief of staff, in a June runoff with more than 65% of the vote. He will join the 120th Congress in 2027.
