Tim Scannell, former president and COO of Stryker, died Sept. 26 after a battle with brain cancer, according to a memorial page by the National Brain Tumor Society.
Mr. Scannell spent 32 years at Stryker, joining the medical device company in 1990 and retiring in 2021. He spent his first 11 years in sales and marketing leadership roles within Stryker’s Endoscopy division.
Between 2003 and 2018, Mr. Scannell led three Stryker divisions, serving as vice president and general manager of Stryker Biotech, president and general manager of Stryker Spine, and group president of MedSurg & Neurotechnology.
After retiring in 2021, Mr. Scannell remained an adviser to Stryker for the next year and a half. He also served on the board of Insulet, eventually becoming chairman. By 2026, he served on six additional medtech boards, with a particular interest in companies developing technology for neurological cancers and diseases.
Mr. Scannell also played football at the University of Notre Dame (Ind.), where he was an All-American and a captain of the 1985 team. He later served as a graduate assistant coach for Notre Dame, including during its 1988 national championship season, before working for the U.S. Secret Service from 1988 to 1990.
