Tampa, Fla., spine surgeon David Siambanes, DO, 59, and Dawn Stone, RN, 53, an advanced practice nurse, died the morning of Sept. 3 in a plane crash near Tampa Executive Airport.
Dr. Siambanes and Ms. Stone worked for BayCare at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. Ms. Stone also worked for AdventHealth.
Dr. Siambanes was a pediatric orthopedic spine surgeon who focused on scoliosis and spinal deformities. He founded the Children’s Scoliosis Center and served as director of the scoliosis center at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. He previously served as president of the spine section of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics.
Ms. Stone was a nurse practitioner who spent more than two decades in healthcare, with clinical expertise in orthopedics, adult bone health and women’s health.
Dr. Siambanes was the pilot and Ms. Stone was the passenger. The two, who were married, were the only passengers aboard the plane, which was airborne for about a minute before crashing about half a mile from the airport, according to a Sept. 4 article by Fox 13.
The Federal Aviation Administration released a preliminary report Friday classifying the crash as accidental.
