Atlanta-based Emory University School of Medicine named Guy McKhann II, MD, chair of its department of neurosurgery, effective Sept. 14.
Dr. McKhann succeeds Daniel Barrow, MD, who will retire later this year after leading the department for more than 30 years, according to a June 16 news release.
Dr. McKhann currently serves as the Helene and Johannes Huth Endowed Professor and vice chair of neurological surgery at New York City-based Columbia University Irving Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. He is also co-chief of the stereotactic and functional division and co-chief of the brain tumor division.
At Columbia, Dr. McKhann directs the epilepsy neurophysiology laboratory and collaborates on research involving human neurophysiology, brain tumor-related epilepsy and normal pressure hydrocephalus/Alzheimer’s disease. His research has received funding from the National Institutes of Health, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and private foundations and organizations.
In his new role, Dr. McKhann will oversee the department’s patient care, research and education programs focused on disorders of the brain, spine and nervous system, according to the release.
