Here are five key notes:
1. Dr. Schiff was granted the award to study infant deaths from neonatal sepsis in developing countries and reduce them by identifying the roots of infection.
2. Dr. Schiff is a professor of neurosurgery and the Brush Chair Professor of Engineering in Engineering Science and Mechanics at Hershey-based Pennsylvania State University.
3. Dr. Schiff earned his medical degree at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C.
4. Dr. Schiff will use an engineering control strategy to develop a model-based system to prevent infections.
5. This is the first Pioneer Award that Penn State has received and the first received by a neurosurgeon. The award will be administered through Penn State College of Medicine.
