Hanbing (Steve) Zhou, MD, of Orthopedic Associates of Hartford (Conn.) performed the first case using the Varisync ALIF NanoPrime system, according to a Nov. 15 news release.
Zavation’s NanoPrime, which was launched on Nov. 14, is an implant material that combines PEEK with advanced titanium ion bond technology.
Dr. Zhou performed a 2-level ALIF with the Varisync implant for a patient with a L4-L5 Grade 1 spondylolisthesis and severe L5-S1 spondylosis. The patient reported an improvement in symptoms after surgery.
“Its softer modulus compared to pure titanium reduces the risk of subsidence, while the titanium-bonded surface promotes solid fusion and eliminates my concerns of fibrous union,” Dr. Zhou said in the release.
