Shahram Majidi, MD, assistant professor of neurosurgery, neurology and radiology at the Icahn School of Medicine in New York City, performed the procedure, according to a July 19 news release. The device is implanted using an endovascular approach instead of an open-brain surgery.
Synchron began its trial in May. Its implant, Stentrode, is similar to Elon Musk’s Neuralink and aims to help patients with spinal cord injuries. Neuralink is awaiting FDA approval while Stentrode has investigational device exemption from the agency.
