Here are four things to know:

1. Surgeons used to shy away from operating on elderly patients over the age of 70, as the patients were at risk of suffering from paralysis or complications due to their weakened immune system.

2. Dr. Khurana recommends surgeons thoroughly evaluate the elderly patient before considering surgery, as surgery might present a greater risk to a specific patient.

3. “As long as an elderly patient is otherwise in good health, we can provide permanent, life-changing results that were not possible only so many years ago,” said Dr. Khurana. “There’s no reason why a patient in his or her 70s cannot regain mobility through spinal surgery today.”

4. Dr. Khurana completed a spinal reconstruction fellowship at the Jackson Memorial Hospital as well as the University of Miami/Project to Cure Paralysis.
