Dr. Richard Duncan Receives Spine Health Foundation’s Hope Award: 5 Things to Know

 

Richard Duncan, MD, has been given the 2014 Hope Award at the Spine Health Foundation’s annual fundraiser — Derby Day.

Here are five things to know about Dr. Duncan and the Hope Award:

1. The Hope Award is given to individuals who selflessly help to fulfill the mission of the Spine Health Foundation, which is to provide education, encouragement and healing solutions to individuals suffering from chronic back pain related to spinal disorders or injuries. 

 
2. Dr. Duncan is an orthopedic spine surgeon and has been practicing with Watauga Orthopaedics since 1994. He focuses on minimally invasive techniques and was the first physician in the Tri-Cities to perform outpatient spinal surgery.

 

Watauga Orthopaedics, founded in 1950, offers general orthopedic care as well as total joint replacement procedures, arthroscopy procedures, sports medicine services, fracture care and reconstructive hip, knee, foot and ankle surgery.

 

3. Dr. Duncan is board-certified and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, North American Spine Society and State of Franklin Orthopaedic Society, according to a Work It, TriCities report. 

 

4. Funds raised from the Derby Day event are used to help disadvantaged individuals gain access to specialized spine care and medical resources.

 

The event takes place on the day of the Kentucky Derby and includes a reception, dinner, auction as well as a Derby hat contest. Attendees are encouraged to wear Derby-inspired fashion and celebrate a long-standing American tradition.

 

5. Dr. Duncan earned his medical degree at the Oxford-based University of Mississippi and completed his residency at the University of Mississippi Medical School. He has also completed a spine fellowship at Baylor Medical Center in Houston.
