Dr. Joseph Osorio debuts AI robotic spine surgery on the West Coast

Joseph Osorio, MD, PhD, of UC San Diego Health, performed the first case on the West Coast using Medtronic’s Stealth AXiS robot.

Stealth AXiS combines robotic technology and AI to help surgeons operate with increased precision.

“This platform fundamentally changes how we think about spine surgery,” Dr. Osorio said in the release. “For the first time, we are bringing together artificial intelligence, data-driven alignment planning, patient-specific implants, navigation, and robotic screw delivery within a single system. That level of precision and coordination allows us to operate more efficiently while significantly enhancing safety for our patients.”

The robot has been rolling out on the East Coast as well with debut cases in Kentucky and Virginia.
