Dr. Joseph Maroon wins UPMC Clinician of Courage Award

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has honored neurosurgeon Joseph Maroon, MD, with the 2020 UPMC Loren Roth Clinician of Courage Award, Steelers.com reported Aug. 16.

Recipients of the award are commended for being leaders within their community and overcoming adversity.

Dr. Maroon specializes in minimally invasive spine and brain surgery. He is a leader in the sports medicine field due to his concussion management research and has worked closely with the NFL and WWE.

He co-developed the ImPACT test (immediate post-concussion assessment and cognitive testing) with neuropsychologist, Mark Lovell, PhD. The test is used by more than 12,000 colleges and high schools and professional sports organizations, including the NFL, MLB and NHL.
