Here are five things to know about the event:
1. The race’s goal is to raise $60,000 for GraceWay Recovery Residency, a non-profit, faith-based, long-term substance abuse/addiction treatment community for women. All of the proceeds from the event will go toward GraceWay residents.
2. There are 500 attendees expected from Georgia and surrounding states. Dr. Hellman, a spine surgeon with the Spine and Scoliosis Center at Georgia Sports Medicine in Tifton, has spearheaded the efforts. He received the 2011 Patient Choice Award for spine surgery and has practiced in the South Georgia Region for 13 years.
3. The race is an annual event, held since 2006. “Eight years ago, Dr. Hellman presented this idea because he had friends who ran (and knew of) the beauty at Lake Blackshear. Dr. Hellman is a very generous man, and he and his wife help put this on,” said Executive Director at GraceWay Liz Dixon in the news report.
4. During his career, Dr. Hellman has served as chairman of the deparment of surgery at Tifton Regional Medical Center. He also served on the ethics, medical examination and physician leadership committees.
5. Dr. Hellman is committed to serving the community in many different ways. He has introduced less invasive alternatives for neck and back surgery to the community and was one of 20 practices that participated in an FDA validation trial for the Solitaire Anterior Lumbar implant for degenerative disc disease.
