Christopher Good, MD, completed the first minimally invasive robotic Bertolotti’s resection surgery in the world.
The procedure, which was performed at Reston (Va.) Hospital Center, provides an alternative surgical option for patients who suffer from chronic back pain caused by Bertolotti syndrome, according to a Nov. 25 news release from VSI.
Resection surgery for Bertolotti syndrome traditionally requires large incisions and significant tissue disruption. The new technique reduces disruption and exposure with the help of robotic planning and guiding.
By making a smaller incision, patients can have less postoperative pain, minimal blood loss, less time in the hospital and a faster recovery, the release said.
Dr. Good is a spine surgeon, CEO and president of Reston, Va.-based VSI. He also served as lead author on a scientific publication that validated robotic bone cutting in minimally invasive spine procedures.
