Ben Burch, MD, of Gainesville, Ga.-based Specialty Orthopaedics performed the state’s first fully endoscopic spinal fusions.

Dr. Burch has been a pioneer in the approach and also performed Mississippi’s first endoscopic spine surgery, according to a Sept. 22 news release shared with Becker’s.

With endoscopic spine surgery, Dr. Burch was able to perform surgery through small incisions less than an inch long.

“Endoscopic surgery is redefining how we think about spine surgery,” Dr. Burch said in the release. “It allows us to achieve the same surgical goals as traditional techniques, like spinal fusion, but through incisions so small that patients experience less pain, faster recovery, and often avoid overnight hospital stays. In my view, this will become the gold standard in spine surgery within the next decade.”

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
