Dr. Behrooz Akbarnia Leads Team of Surgeons in New Scoliosis Treatment

On May 7, Behrooz Akbarnia, MD, led a team of surgeons at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego in performing two pediatric surgeries with Ellipse Technologies’ MAGnetic Expansion Control System.

The MAGEC System, comprised of implantable adjustable growing rods, is designed to treat early-onset scoliosis. The FDA granted Compassionate Use approval to use the system in these two surgeries, which were the first of their kind to be performed.

Dr. Akbarnia is a clinical professor of orthopedics at the University of California, San Diego and the medical director of the San Diego Center for Spinal Disorders.
