Combined CPT and ICD-9-CM Most Specifically Captures Cervical Spine Procedures

Using the combined CPT and ICD-9-CM algorithm to identify cervical spine surgery is the most specific way to report the procedure and can impact outcome and cost, according to a report published in Spine.

The researchers performed a retrospective study comparing the sensitivity and specificity of the combined CPT and ICD-9-CM code algorithm and comparing the accuracy of the combination with the ICD-9-CM-only algorithm. Compared to the single algorithm, the combined algorithm was able to improve identification of discectomy, laminectomy and fusion procedures. It also allowed for the identification of laminoplasty and instrumentation with higher specificity.
