The neurosurgeon and orthopedic spine surgeon decided to collaborate for additional expertise in the OR. Dr. Foroohar, a neurosurgeon, has expertise in microsurgery and is comfortable operating close to the nerve. Dr. Mannion, an orthopedic spine surgeon, has more experience with the implantable hardware involved in many spine procedures.
According to the report, the surgeons will split the surgical fee, which means they will be paid less than if they were not collaborating on each procedure. However, Dr. Mannion says the collaboration is beneficial because their patients have fewer complications, shorter hospital stays and better outcomes.
