Neurosurgeon and founding partner of Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates, Jerry Petty, MD, died at age 90, the Charlotte, N.C.-based practice said in an April 22 Facebook post.
During his 53-year career he pioneered the use of CT in Charlotte and served as a medical consultant for NASCAR and the NFL.
“We are honored to stand on the foundation he built,” the post said. “Thank you, Dr. Petty. Your life’s work continues to guide and inspire us all.”
NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. paid tribute to Dr. Petty in a post on X, saying he “will remember him for being a friend to the Nascar industry and helping so many drivers through all sorts of injuries. Above all that, he was a kind amazing person. Always cracking a joke and keeping spirits high. He left a very positive impression on this world and will be missed.”
Dr. Petty earned his medical degree at University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill and completed his residency at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
