Bryan Cunningham to lead MedStar Orthopaedics spinal research efforts — 5 highlights

Bryan Cunningham, PhD, joined Columbia, Md.-based MedStar Health to lead the newly formed Musculoskeletal Education and Research Institute.

Here are five things to know.

1. Based at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Md., Dr. Cunningham will manage pre-clinical trials, oversee regulatory submissions for private industry, and develop and oversee the submission process for peer-reviewed journal publications and abstracts.

2. Dr. Cunningham is also tasked with developing a non-clinical research fellowship program.

3. The Musculoskeletal Education and Research Institute, formed in collaboration with the Hyattsville, Md.-based MedStar Health Research Institute, will explore degenerative, deformity, traumatic and congenital pathologies of the musculoskeletal system.

4. Research at the center will cover scientific disciplines including biomechanical testing, histology, radiography and in-vivo biological modeling.

5. Dr. Cunningham previously served as director of the Orthopaedic Research Institute at The University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson. He was also director of spinal research in the department of orthopedic surgery at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital.
