Here are five key points on Beebe Healthcare and its spine surgery program:

1. The certification indicates the program has met the highest national standards and guidelines. The Joint Commission issues the certification only after an on-site review is carried out to assess the hospital’s commitment to excellence in providing disease-specific services.

“This reflects the combined efforts and commitment to our patients and to achieving the standards of quality that are based on best practice guidelines by the surgeons, the surgical teams, those in the orthopedic department as well as to all of our healthcare professionals involved in the care of spine surgery patients,” said Steven Rhone, RN, vice president of patient care services at Beebe Healthcare.

2. Beebe’s orthopedics unit includes 12 board-certified surgeons, 45 specially trained nurses and nurses assistants as well as physical and occupational therapists, licensed social workers, and discharge planners. They provide a wide array of services, including joint and skeletal repairs, knee and hip replacement and spinal surgery.

3. For two years in a row — 2012 and 2013 — HealthGrades has named Beebe Medical Center the best in Delmarva for total knee replacement, total hip replacement, back and neck surgery, overall orthopedic services, joint replacement and spine surgery. In 2013, Consumers Reports noted that Beebe was the safest hospital in Delaware to have a surgery, according to the Cape Gazette report.

4. Four of Beebe’s 12 orthopedic surgeons perform spine surgery, and the medical team takes a comprehensive approach to patient care, notes the report. Beebe includes a pre-spine surgery education class to prepare patients for the surgery and what to expect during and after surgery. It also includes a recuperation program to aid a speedy recovery with less pain.

5. Founded in 1916 by brothers James Beebe, MD, and Richard C. Beebe, MD, the medical center is a 210-bed, nonprofit community hospital. Beebe also operates the Beebe Health Campus on Route 24, Beebe Lab Express, Gull House Adult Activities Center, Home Health Agency and a nursing school.
