Banner Health hospital taps chief of orthopedic spine surgery

Shaleen Vira, MD, has been appointed chief of orthopedic spine surgery at Phoenix-based Banner Health’s University Medical Center, according to a July 28 LinkedIn post. 

Dr. Vira is a board-certified spine surgeon with dual training in orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery. He specializes in complex spine reconstruction, minimally invasive techniques and spinal tumors and trauma. He has authored more than 500 publications and focuses on data-driven improvements in surgical outcomes, according to his LinkedIn page.

He earned his medical degree from New York City-based NYU Grossman School of Medicine and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases. He went on to complete a combined orthopedic and neurosurgical spine surgery fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic, where he trained in complex spine reconstruction. He is currently completing the surgical leadership program at Boston-based Harvard Medical School and will graduate in June 2026.
