Back & Neck Pain Significant Contributors to Long-Term Disability: Study

A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that life expectancy in the United States has increased to 78.2 years, but the diseases with the largest number of years lived with a disability included back pain, neck pain and musculoskeletal disorders.

The other large contributors to years lived with disability include major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders. “As the US population has aged, YLDs have compromised a larger share of the [disability-adjusted life years] than the [years of life lost due to premature death],” according to the report.
