Attorney General Merrick Garland to undergo minimally invasive spine surgery

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland is set to undergo minimally invasive spine surgery over the weekend, according to a Jan. 29 report from Politico.

The back procedure will treat Mr. Garland’s spinal stenosis and should take about 90 minutes. It will be performed under general anesthesia, and the AG is expected to return home the same day. 

The report detailed the affected vertebrae and the planned operation but did not say where the surgery would take place or who would be operating on Mr. Garland. 

While he is out of commission, Mr. Garland will officially transfer power to the Justice Department’s number two official, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco. 

Mr. Garland is expected to return to work the week of Feb. 5, according to a Jan. 29 report from NBC News
