Alexander R. Vaccaro, MD, a spine surgeon at Philadelphia-based Rothman Institute, founded a nonprofit organization, called Association for Collaborative Spine Research, to help raise money and organize studies. But, Dr. Vaccaro told The Inquirer that his budget is limited.
Companies who develop devices are happy to pay for studies that examine the effectiveness of their product with regard to other devices, but finding funding for studies that examine the treatment itself or the procedure is near impossible. Dr. Vaccaro and his colleagues are looking for funding from a wide-range of sources, including foundations and wealth patients, according to the report.
