An augmented reality surgical navigation system placed pedicle screws with a positional error of 1.1 mm and an angular error of 1.3° in a cadaveric study published June 30 in the Journal of Spine Surgery.

Researchers evaluated OnPoint Surgical’s OnPoint AR system using 80 pedicle screws placed by three experienced spine surgeons across five cadaveric specimens, according to a Sept. 9 news release. OnPoint Surgical is an augmented reality and AI technology developer for spinal interventions.

The study included osteoporotic anatomy and used open and minimally invasive techniques across the thoracic and lumbosacral spine. Researchers compared postoperative CT scans of the implanted screws with planned trajectories to measure positional and angular error in three dimensions.

Screw placement accuracy was 100%, with no medial or inferior breaches observed. The OnPoint AR system uses a headset with 3D stereoscopic targeting technology that overlays guidance onto the surgical site in the surgeon’s field of view, according to the release.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
