Ankylosing spondylitis patients with spine fractures at heightened risk of death — 4 observations

University of California San Francisco researchers found spine fracture with spinal cord injury yielded the highest risk of death for those patients, according to Medpage Today.

Arthritis Care & Research published the study.

 

Here are four observations:

 

1. Cervical spine fracture correlates with in-hospital mortality.

 

2. Cervical spine fractures are a complication of ankylosing spondylitis.

 

3. AS patients have an estimated 14 percent lifetime risk of vertebral fracture.

 

4. Researchers concluded patients with AS and cervical spine fracture demand immediate and specialized care.
