American Association of Neurological Surgeons names spine section chair

The American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons have appointed Luis Manuel Tumialán, MD, as chair of the Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves. 

The association’s Spine Section is one of the largest subspecialty groups in organized neurosurgery, according to an April 17 news release. 

Dr. Tumialán is a professor of neurosurgery at Tempe-based Arizona State University School of Medicine and Medical Engineering in collaboration with Scottsdale, Ariz.-based HonorHealth. He has authored more than 140 peer-reviewed publications and over 20 book chapters. He currently serves as a director of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons and chair of the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies.

He previously held leadership roles within the Spine Section, including scientific program chairman, annual meeting chairman and secretary.
