Victory Medical Center Landmark in San Antonio has appointed orthopedic spine surgeon Steven Cyr, MD, its chief of staff. Dr. Cyr previously served as chief of Air Force Spine Surgery and as a spine surgery consultant to the Surgeon General of the Air Force.
The North American Spine Society has awarded “Back Pain’s Association with Vertebral Endplate Signal Changes in Sciatica,” led by Abdelilah el Barzouhi, MD, MSc, a 2013 Outstanding Paper Award in Surgical Science.
NASS has awarded “Nerve and Recovery after Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion With and Without Bone Morphogenic Protein-2 Augmentation: A Cohort Controlled Study,” led by Marios G. Lykissas, MD, PhD, a 2013 Outstanding Paper Award in Surgical Science.
The University of Rochester (N.Y.) has appointed James C. Metcalf Jr., MD, assistant professor of neurosurgery. Dr. Metcalf will also provide care at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, N.Y.
Pediatric neurosurgeon Laszlo Nagy, MD, has been appointed the Robert Moore, MD, Endowed Chair in Pediatrics. The chair is a partnership between Covenant Health and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in Lubbock.
NASS has awarded “Comparative Outcomes and Cost Utility following Surgical Treatment of Focal Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Compared With Osteoarthritis of the Hip or Knee: Part 1. Long-Term Change in Health-Related Quality of Life. Part 2. Estimated Lifetime Incremental Cost-Utility Ratios,” led by Raja Y. Rampersaud, MD, a 2013 Outstanding Paper Award in Value.
A. Nick Shamie, MD, has been appointed chief of orthopedic spine surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Shamie also serves as president of the American College of Spine Surgery.
NASS has awarded “Does Physical Activity Influence the Relationship Between Low Back Pain and Obesity?” led by Matthew W. Smuck, MD, a 2013 Outstanding Paper Award in Medical and Interventional Science.
