Construction began in March and included renovating approximately 21,000 square feet into 21 private rooms and turning an additional 21 semi-private rooms into private rooms. The hospital’s chief of orthopedics, E. Patrick Mitchell, DO, had wanted to create this unit for several years. The move of physician offices to a separate building and funding from Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanguard Health Systems made the project a reality.

The unit is the first major DMC construction project completed with funding from Vanguard Health Systems, which acquired DMC early this year, according to the report. Vanguard is investing $850 million in DMC over five years for construction projects including the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Specialty Center in Detroit, emergency department expansion at DMC Sinai Grace Hospital in Detroit and a cardiovascular institute at DMC’s main campus.
