Providers scheduled for meaningful use stage 2 can attest again to MU1 in 2014
Under a CMS-proposed rule, published Tuesday, providers that were not able to fully implement 2014 Edition certified EHR technology in time to successfully attest to meaningful use would be able to use 2011 Edition CEHRT a combination of 2011 and 2014 Edition to attest to either stage 1 or stage 2. Providers would also be able to attest to meaningful use under the 2013 reporting year definition and use 2013’s clinical quality measures.

 

Life Spine enters the China market
The company partnered with China Pioneer Pharma Holdings to enter into the China market. China Pioneer Pharma Holdings is based in Shanghai and sells to more than 23,000 hospitals in the country.

 

Medtronic 4Q revenues down 2%
Medtronic announced net earnings of $448 million in 4Q of FY 2014, down from net warnings of $969 million during the same period last year. The company reported net earnings of $3.1 billion for the fiscal year ended April 25, 2014, down from the $3.5 billion earned for fiscal year 2013. The company also announced net sales of $4.6 billion in 4Q of 2014, up slightly from 4Q of 2013 when net sales were $4.5 billion.

 

BMP study examines complications
The Spine Journal published an analysis of patients who received bone morphogenetic protein in thoracolumbar spine surgery from 2006 to 2010. The study found that there was an increased risk of complications with BMP use for patients who underwent multi-level procedures 30 days postoperatively.

 

Zimmer’s Q1 2014 net earnings total $221.5 million
The company reported net earnings of $221.5 million in Q1, up from $218.6 million during the same period last year. The company also reported net sales of $1.2 billion, up slightly from Q1 2013 when the company saw net sales of $1.1 billion.

 

The North American Spine Society joined the Alliance of Specialty Medicine
NASS joined the Alliance to urge Congress to pass meaningful legislation to repeal the sustainable growth rate formula. The Alliance sent a letter to Congress, but some members of Congress aren’t optimistic they’ll reach a solution.

Mr. Dremel has more than 27 years of experience in the development and commercialization of orthopedic products. He most recently served as general manager of Medacta USA’s Joint Reconstruction Division.
