Researchers identified 578,457 patients undergoing lumbar decompression and lumbar fusion between the years 2002 and 2009.
1. Deep vein thrombosis occurred in 2.4 of 1,000 cases in lumbar decompression patients.
2. Pulmonary embolism occurred in 1.0 of 1,000 cases in lumbar decompression patients.
3. Deep vein thrombosis occurred in 4.3 of 1,000 cases in lumbar fusion patients
4. Pulmonary embolism occurred in 2.6 of 1,000 cases in lumbar fusion patients.
5. Larger hospitals, teaching hospital status, anemia, obesity, fluid disorders, pulmonary circulation disorders and coagulopathy are risk factors for deep vein thrombosis.
6. Teaching hospital status, anemia, fluid disorders, black ethnicity and pulmonary circulation disorders are risk factors for pulmonary embolism.
