The University of California San Diego in La Jolla received $5 million from an anonymous donor to support research and treatment for spinal cord and neurological injuries.
The funding supported the launch of the Spinal Therapeutics, Engineering, Limb and Life Advancement Initiative, according to a Sept. 28 news release. The initiative is focused on advancing spinal cord recovery through neural restoration.
The initiative will integrate regenerative science, precision surgical delivery, bioelectric medicine and advanced diagnostics. Its work will initially center on three scientific pillars: intelligent diagnostics and targeted therapeutics, personalized regeneration and precision delivery.
Alexander Khalessi, MD, professor and chair of neurological surgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine, will lead the initiative. Shadi Dayeh, PhD, and Mark Tuszynski, MD, PhD, are also initiative leaders.
The gift will also fund innovative research projects, data science and predictive modeling, clinical trials and precision medicine programs for pediatric and adult patients. It will support the development of manufacturing standards for devices and biologics.
At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
