Spine surgeon convicted in kickback scheme could lose license

Spine surgeon Thomas Raley Jr., MD, may lose his license as he serves a three-year sentence for a drug kickback scheme, The Baltimore Sun reported March 30.

Dr. Raley was sentenced in 2022 after pleading guilty to kickback conspiracy and wire fraud charges involving prescription pain creams and referrals. Along with his sentence, he and his practice paid more than $3 million to settle a related civil case, the report said.

Now, the Maryland Board of Physicians may revoke his license in response to a petition filed by the state's attorney general. In 2022, the board reprimanded Dr. Raley for failure to cooperate with the agency's investigation of the practice. An attorney for Dr. Raley provided more than 50 letters of support from patients and family in a court filing before his sentencing.

Dr. Raley is expected to be released from prison in October 2024.
