The Scoliosis Research Society named the winners of the Thomas E. Whitecloud Awards during the 30th International Meeting on Advanced Spine Techniques held March 22-24 in Dublin.

The winner for the best basic science or translational research paper is "What Are We Transfusing? A Prospective Trial Evaluating the Quality of Intraoperatively Salvaged Red Blood Cells in Spinal Deformity Surgery," led by Darryl Lau, MD, director of spinal neurosurgery research at New York City-based NYU Langone.

The award for best clinical research paper was awarded to "Decompression With or Without Fusion for Grade 1 Degenerative Lumbar Spondylolisthesis: 60-Month Outcomes From the QOD," led by Andrew Chan, the co-director of minimally invasive spine surgery and director of neurological spine research at New York City-based Columbia University Medical Center, according to a March 24 news release shared with Becker's.

The awards are named after co-founder of the meeting, Thomas Whitecloud.

Attendees of the meeting are able to vote on the winners, which is taken into account by the committee.
