Timothy Vogel, MD, and Derek Hanson, MD, founded the Center for Discovery and Innovation at Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center.
The center will conduct clinical research to treat neuro-oncological issues. Specifically, the pair will conduct research around rare brain tumors.
"These exceptionally aggressive tumors usually affect children younger than four years of age, with an average survival rate of six months to a year following diagnosis," Dr. Vogel said. "I see it as my responsibility to help advance our medical knowledge of these potentially devastating diseases as much as possible, and I feel privileged to touch the lives of every pediatric patient who requires care."
Hackensack-based New Jersey Brain and Spine announced the center's formation Nov. 3. Dr. Vogel is the practice's director of pediatric neurosurgery.
