Dr. Good said one advantage of performing robot-guided surgery rather than freehand surgery is the potential for improved accuracy of implant placement. With robot-guided surgery “implant accuracy is improved from 91 percent to 94 percent,” he said.
Dr. Good said the number of reoperations due to misplaced implants is 1 percent when robot-guided surgery is used, as compared to 12 percent when freehand surgery is used.
Along with increased accuracy of implant placement and a decrease in reoperations, Dr. Good said improved safety of the procedure, improved strength of fixation and less intra-operative radiation are all potential benefits of performing robot-guided surgery.
