Latest lawsuit against Dr. Atiq Durrani & Children's Hospital Medical Center begins

The jury was seated Sept. 24 for the latest case against fugitive spine surgeon Atiq Durrani, MD, and Cincinnati-based Children's Hospital Medical Center, according to WLWT.

The eight jurors and four alternatives are expected to hear two weeks of testimony from as many as a dozen witnesses. This latest case concerns a child with spina bifida. It is also the first Dr. Durrani case with a connection to Children's Hospital Medical Center.

Prosecutors in the civil suit are arguing Dr. Durrani unnecessarily performed spine surgery on a now-14-year-old patient. Dr. Durrani performed spine surgery on the patient more than 12 years ago. The operation was unsuccessful and the patient was left paralyzed.

Dr. Durrani is expected to appear for a video deposition. The spine surgeon fled the country to avoid criminal charges, authorities allege. Both Dr. Durrani and Children's Hospital Medical Center deny any wrongdoing.

This lawsuit follows the settlement between Cincinnati-based West Chester Hospital and 350 former Dr. Durrani patients. The settlement details were not disclosed.
