4 Top Reasons for Readmissions Following Spine Surgery

A recent study in the journal Spine looked retrospectively at all early admissions at a single orthopedic specialty hospital between 2007 and 2009 to analyze what was causing unplanned readmissions.

Of the 141 unplanned readmissions identified, here were the four most common causes, and the percentage of patients returning to the hospital because of them.

•    Infection — 32%
•    Nonsurgical complications — 22%
•    Complications requiring surgical revision — 15%
•    Wound drainage — 9%

Fifty-seven percent of the unplanned readmissions analyzed required a return to the operating room. The average length of stay for such readmissions was 6.5 days, according to the study.
