Spine, Orthopedic Groups to GOP: Support New Emergency Medicine Legislation

Spine

Several spine and orthopedic organizations, including the Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, recently signed a letter to the GOP Doctors Caucus asking them to support new legislation for emergency medicine.

H.R. 809, the Field EMS Quality, Innovation, Cost-Effectiveness Act was designed to address emergency medical services challenges. It would implement several recommendations from the Institute of Medicine, which issued a report in 2006 identifying several problems with the system.

Specifically, the legislation would designate HHS as the primary federal agency for EMS and trauma and consolidate federal EMS and trauma programs. It would establish programs for field EMS agencies, state and educational entities to promote higher quality and cost efficiencies, according to the letter.
