Spine Surgeon to Know: Dr. Vincent Traynelis of Rush University Medical Center

Vincent C. Traynelis, MD, is the director of the neurosurgery spine service at Rush University Medical Center, as well as vice chairperson and professor of the department of neurosurgery. He is a past president of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the Cervical Spine Research Society, and a past chairperson of the Joint Section of Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves. He is also a member of Cervical Spine Research Society and North American Spine Society.

Dr. Traynelis is board-certified and focuses on complex spine surgery, spinal deformity, spinal arthroplasty, spinal reconstruction, spinal tumors, spinal cord tumors and minimally invasive spine surgery. He has published more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals as well as more than 65 chapters and four books. His research interests include cervical spine surgery, spinal infections, operative monitoring and spinal biomechanics.

 

Dr. Traynelis also serves as a consultant for Medtronic Sofamor Danek and receives institutional research support and royalties from them. He is an ad hoc reviewer for Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery. He has been a chairman of the editorial board for Journal of Neurosurgery Spine and a director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery.

 

Dr. Traynelis earned his medical degree from West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown, where he also completed residencies in neurosurgery and general surgery.
