Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Ziya Gokaslan of Johns Hopkins Medicine

Ziya Gokaslan, MD, is the neurosurgical spine center and vice-chairman of neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He is a member of Cervical Spine Research Society, American Society of Clinical Oncology and America Association of Neurological Surgeons. He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed papers and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques and The Spine Journal.

Dr. Gokaslan was previously an assistant professor at University of Texas’ MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where he focused on the surgical treatment of spinal neoplasms. He published extensively on the topic. He is also the chairman of AANS/CNS Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves.

Dr. Gokaslan is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He focuses on the surgical treatment of both primary and metastatic spinal tumors, sacral neoplasms and spinal cord tumors. His clinical interests include degenerative disc herniation, cervical disc herniation, cervical myelopathy, sciatica, scoliosis, spinal column tumors, spinal cord injury, spinal cord malformation, spinal reconstruction and spinal trauma.

Dr. Gokaslan earned his medical degree at the University of Istanbul in Turkey and completed his residency in neurotrauma at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He has also completed a fellowship in spine surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City.
