Dr. Garfin served as the chair of UC San Diego’s orthopedic surgery department for 21 years, and currently serves as the interim dean of the UC San Diego School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from the Minneapolis-based University of Minnesota Medical School and underwent spinal disorder fellowship training at Philadelphia-based Pennsylvania Hospital.
He has published more than 300 articles, authored 145 book chapters and edited 21 books. Dr. Garfin is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Cervical Spine Research Society and International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery, among other organizations.
