Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Scott Spann of Westlake Orthopaedics Spine & Sports

Scott Spann, MD, is the founder of Westlake Orthopaedics Spine & Sports in Austin, Texas. He is also the chairman of spine surgery at The Hospital at Westlake Medical Center in Austin and founder of Pantheon Spinal, a medical device company that manufactures advanced lumbar spine surgery products and implants also based in Austin. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Texas Orthopaedic Association and North American Spine Society.

Dr. Spann established Pantheon Spinal in 2007, and he holds patents for surgical products and implants related to spine. He has also participated in numerous clinical trials. Having suffered a major spinal cord injury himself in 2005, Dr. Spann presents to healthcare practitioner audiences nationwide on numerous topics, including his personal journey with traumatic spine injury. Dr. Spann focuses his clinical practice on cervical spine disorders and lumbar degenerative disc disease.

 

“The industry should be trying to continue providing doctors with the best and most innovative devices and technology to optimize outcomes for their patients while still being able to maintain the best business practices. Ideally, this will allow for both groups to maintain their positions at the pinnacles of the industry,” said Dr. Spann in a Becker’s Spine Review article.

 

Dr. Spann earned his medical degree at the University of South Carolina in Columbia and completed his orthopedic residency at Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans. He has completed fellowship training at Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta.
