Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Rick Sasso of Indiana Spine Group

Rick Sasso, MD, is a founding member, and the president of Indiana Spine Group in Indianapolis. He is also the co-medical director of the St. Vincent Spine Center and a volunteer associate professor of clinical orthopedics at Indiana University School of Medicine, both in Indianapolis.

Dr. Sasso is a member of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, North American Spine Society, Scoliosis Research Society and Cervical Spine Research Society. He is also the 2013 recipient of the St. Vincent Health Research Symposium Career Achievement in Research Award.

 

Dr. Sasso pioneered the development of minimally invasive spine surgery and is active in the development of instrumentation for treating spinal disorders. He was among the first surgeons in the United States to perform a cervical disc replacement. His clinical interests include cervical herniated discs, cervical spine diseases, degenerative spine, discectomy, fractures, kyphosis and lumbar degenerative disc disease. His research interests include cervical spine biomechanics and intraoperative spinal image navigation.

 

Dr. Sasso earned his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Texas Medical School. His has completed spine fellowships at Northwestern University in Chicago, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and in St. Gallen, Switzerland.
