Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Richard Spiro of Pennsylvania Brain and Spine Institute

Richard Marc Spiro, MD, is co-director of the Butler-based Pennsylvania Brain and Spine Institute, before which he served as the director of adult spine services at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. At UPMC, he also served as a clinical instructor in the department of neurological surgery and a liaison to the hospital’s Surgical Oversight Committee.

Dr. Spiro is a member of the American Medical Association, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons and North American Spine Society. In 2004, he received the University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurological Surgery Resident Teaching Award. He has published several articles in professional journals, including Neurosurgery.

 

Dr. Spiro is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. His clinical interests include general neurosurgery, spinal abnormalities, spinal tumors, revision spinal surgery, cervical herniated discs and complex spine conditions. His research interests include hypothermia for spinal cord injury and materials for spinal surgery.

 

Dr. Spiro earned his medical degree from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine in Mobile and completed his surgical internship and residency in neurosurgery at UPMC.
