“Spinal fusion limits the mobility of the spine necessarily and puts added stress on those adjacent levels, levels next to the fusion that over the course of time can break down for individual patients,” said Dr. Balderston in a video. “And that was the frustrating part — to do a wonderful operation that provided significant pain relief, only to have that operation be associated with another problem. That fact is what led me to pursue the idea of replacing the lumbar disc with a prosthesis that allowed motion but also captured the stability of a spinal fusion operation.”
Dr. Balderston earned his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, where he also completed his residency in orthopedic surgery. He has also completed a fellowship in spinal deformity at Twin Cities Scoliosis Center in Minneapolis.
